Managing a youth sports team can be a fun and rewarding experience, but it can also be frustrating and unnecessarily complicated. As coach of a church league high school basketball team, I learned both of these truths. There is no experience like coaching a team, but it can be a lot of work if you are not well prepared.
When I started coaching in 2005, mobile apps were not readily available or very popular. Thanks to advances in technology and hundreds of thousands of new apps coming out each year, there are now over 1,000,000 applications to help with almost anything; including coaching and managing a youth sports team. This article focuses on mobile applications that can assist with any coaching or team management issue or need.
There are all encompassing team management applications that can help with player management, events, keeping track of opposing teams, game venues, and the costs of running the team. A mobile app that can assist with all of these aspects of team management is Arrange My Game.
Arrange My Game is a free mobile app that allows you to work out a game schedule with the players’ availability, manage social network pages, and store information on all of the players, venues, and contact information.
The app is free and available for the iPhone through iTunes, and for Android devices through theGoogle Play store.
My favorite free coaching application for in-game use is GameChanger, which allows for live scoring and statistics for coaches that don’t use a manual scoring book.
Another useful free mobile app for coaches is Coach’s Clipboard, which allows for coaches to diagram and layout plays and share them with players.
Although coaching a youth sports team can be done without mobile apps, these advances in technology can assist with keeping things organized and everyone on the same page, which can be an issue when dealing with teenagers and parents of children who are participating. Take pride in being a coach and have fun while making an impact on the children’s lives.
